Writing Prompts

These are creative nonfiction writing prompts. Go ahead, jump in to get your writing started. Feel free to mix the prompts as creatively as you choose. Good luck!

1. Explore a childhood memory by reimagining it from a different perspective. Write the event from the point of view of another person. Maybe there was a bystander? A goldfish? Even the television. When choosing your narrator, don’t forget to reflect on what details they would have paid attention to, or what type of details and unique background or perspective they would have had about the situation.

2. Tell the nonfiction story that you don’t ever want your dad to read. Yeah that one. Don’t edit or censor yourself.

3. Recall a time when you felt a strong spiritual energy. Describe the moment in detail.

4. Tell the story of one of your family gatherings. Identify any of your family’s most notable characteristics, such as your one uncle who tries to spike the eggnog every Thanksgiving.

5. Choose a location that you’ve come to know very well. Write about it in vivid detail from the perspective of an insect, bug or other animal.

Happy Writing!
